Registration for Mayor Tom Butt's Urban Garden Contest and Showcase is open! Submission deadline: July 9, 2017

The Urban Garden Contest and Showcase is a city-wide home garden competition and tour. Richmond and North Richmond residents are challenged to show off their edible gardens for a chance to win prizes and the title of "Best Edible Garden in Richmond 2017." The contest includes a garden showcase day in which community members can tour participating gardens and receive tips from the city's top amateur gardeners.

​Photo submission:

To complete your registration for the Urban Garden Contest and Showcase, please submit up to five (5) photos of your garden to mayortombutt@gmail.com.


Residential contestants who are chosen to showcase their garden must agree to host judges and community members during an "open garden" event on Saturday, July 15, 2017 from 12:00 pm through 3:00 pm. 

Each showcased garden will have visitors for no more than twenty (20) minutes on the day of the showcase. Contestants are encouraged to check out other entries.

Small space contestants are not required to host an open showcase, but some small space entries will be invited to consider hosting. 

Advanced registration is required to participate in the event. Registration does not guarantee a showcase invitation.

Culminating Event:

Winning gardens must be present to win at the Urban Garden Contest and Showcase Celebration on the afternoon of the showcase day. The event will be held at the Hurlbut Tennis and Garden Park (The Plunge Garden) located at 1 East Richmond Avenue, Richmond, CA 94801.
2017 Judging Panel:

The Urban Garden Contest will be judged by the following panelists:

  • Tom Butt, Mayor, City of Richmond
  • Doria Robinson, Executive Director, Urban Tilth
  • Maryn Hurlbut, Chair, Recreation and Parks Commission

Judging Criteria:

Judges will evaluate gardens based on the following criteria:

  • Diversity of edible plants
  • Diversity of all plants
  • Sustainability features
  • Design, creativity, aesthetic and whimsy
  • Mayor's Wild Card


  • Gift certificate from The Urban Farmer Store
  • Gift certificate from The Watershed Nursery
  • Other cool swag and prizes
